No. 20 Stanford Overpowers Sacramento State

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Justin Davis had 17 points and 10 rebounds to helpNo. 20 Stanford win its 16th consecutive season opener, 77-59 Saturday nightover Sacramento State.

Matt Lottich added 13 points and Rob Little had 12 for the Cardinal, whoshot 50 percent from the field

Jameel Pugh, a transfer from Massachusetts, scored 18 points for theHornets, looking for their first winning season since 1988-89. They lost theirthird straight season opener.

Stanford outrebounded the Hornets 46-22.

Stanford played without junior forward Josh Childress, a preseasonAll-American pick, who has a stress reaction in his left foot.

Hornets' center Tony Champion left the game with an apparent left kneeinjury with 11:47 to play in the first half but was able to return for thesecond half.

Joel Jones hit a 3-pointer with 12:25 left to play to pull the Hornets to49-43. They stuck around a while until the Cardinal used a 13-2 run to pullaway in the final eight minutes. Matt Haryasz made a pair of baskets during therun.

Sacramento State never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

Stanford went on a 20-2 run midway through the first half - highlighted by apair of 3-pointers from Lottich - to expand its lead to 39-19.

Sacramento State outscored the Cardinal 8-2 in the final two minutes of thehalf to cut the deficit to 41-27 at the break.
