ARIZONA HEAD COACH Mike Hankwitz's REMARKS
ON ARIZONA'S OUTLOOK FOR THE ARIZONA STATE GAME:
'We had an excellent practice, and I really like our attitude and our spirit. We really are looking forward to this game.'
ON UA'S TEAM CAPTAINS:
'The players voted on it last week, and Reggie Sampay was elected the offensive captain, Clay Hardt was elected the defensive captain, and Gary Love was elected the special teams captain. They will represent us in the ASU game, and then they will be our permanent captains for the season.
ON ARIZONA STATE'S OFFENSE:
'I really think (Andrew) Walter is one of the premier quarterbacks in the Pac-10. They have had some injuries at running back, and they probably have not gotten the consistent productivity out of the running game as they would have wanted or expected. Walter has an excellent group of receivers; (Skyler) Fulton and (Derek) Hagan have almost 60 catches each, and (Matt) Miller has made big plays for them. They also have done a good job of getting the ball to their backs out of the backfield. When (Loren) Wade is healthy, he is averaging 5.5 yards per carry, and that is one heck of an average. With Walter and his experience and his ability to throw, they certainly throw more than they run. But, we still have to stop the running game.'
ON HANKWITZ'S INTERVIEW WITH THE SEARCH COMMITTEE:
'It went well. All I had hoped for through the whole process was that I would get a chance to present myself, and they gave me that opportunity. That is all I could ask for at this point. Now, I just have to let the chips fall where they may. I feel like I can hold my head up because I feel like we worked our butts off, and we got better. The program is in better shape than when I took it over. No matter what happens, I can sleep knowing that I helped make things better. I would like the chance to make them better permanently, but that is not my decision. I think we kept fighting, and particularly if we win this game, I will feel much better about what we accomplished.'
ON NAMING THE PERMANENT HEAD COACH PRIOR TO THE ASU GAME:
'I really don't know. Ideally, I suppose it might be better to wait until after the game so that all of the focus is on the game itself, but that is not my decision. The one thing we as a coaching staff and a team can focus on now is preparing for the game. That is all we can control right now. That will be our focus, and winning this game is what we are putting all of our thoughts and energy into right now.'
