Bruins Compete in Sun Bowl Tournament

UCLA seniors Travis Johnson and Steve Conway played in the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic Monday at the El Paso Country Club.

Johnson fired rounds of 70-67-137 (-5) and is fifth. Conway posted rounds of 70-74-144 (+2) and is tied for 20th place. Johnson is among 14 players under par for the first 36 holes.

Arizona's Chris Nallen, winner of the event's long drive and putting contests over the weekend, leads the field after rounds of 66-63-129 (-13). He leads Washington's Brock MacKenzie by four shots.

In other UCLA golf news over the weekend, three former Bruins advanced to the third and final stage of PGA TOUR Qualifying School in Florida.

Former UCLA All-Americans Byron Schlagenhauf and Jay Delsing qualified at the Black Horse Course at Seaside, CA. Schlagenhauf tied for 15th at five-under par 283 and Delsing tied for 19th at four-under par 284.

At Beaumont, CA at the Oak Valley Golf Course, former Bruin All-American Steve Pate tied for 20th at 281 to advance to the final stage of qualifying.
