Zach Wells Selected To Academic All-America Team

Nov. 24, 2003

Senior goalkeeper Zach Wells of the top-ranked UCLA men's soccer team has been chosen to the CoSIDA Academic All-America second team, becoming only the second Bruin soccer player to earn this distinction.

Wells, from Costa Mesa, CA (Newport Harbor HS), has accumulated a 3.22 GPA in American Literature and Culture. He is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation with a goals against average of 0.39 and has allowed just seven goals in 1,627 minutes of action with 10 shutouts. Wells, a first-team All-Pac-10 selection this season, is on pace to break the school record for goals against average in a season (0.53 by Anton Nistl in 1989) and is two saves away from tying the school record for career saves (261, set by Nistl). He has also moved into fifth on the career shutouts list with 26 and is tied for third place on the career victories list with 47. He set the school mark for saves in a season with 101 in 2001. Last season, Wells was the 2002 NCAA College Cup Defensive MVP after shutting out Stanford in the NCAA Championship match. He also earned College Soccer News honorable mention All-America honors and second-team acclaim by the Pac-10 and NSCAA Far West Region. He is a two-time Pac-10 All-Academic honoree and a three-time Pac-10 Player of the Week.

Wells joins Josh Keller (1997) as UCLA's only CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.
