Cross Country Places 15 on Pac-10 All-Academic Squads

Nov. 25, 2003

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington's cross country teams on Tuesday placed 15 athletes on the Pac-10's All-Academic cross country squads, including three each on the first- and second-teams. To be eligible for Pac-10 All-Academic honors, an athlete must have completed at least one academic year at their current institution, have a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, and be a starter or significant contributor.

The Huskies' 15 honorees were second only to Stanford's 16, and were the most-ever by a UW cross-country team. Washington's 22nd-ranked cross country teams finished the 2003 season Monday at the NCAA Championships in Waterloo, Iowa, with the UW women taking 19th and the Husky men 21st.

The Huskies' three first-team recipients included two sophomores and a redshirt freshman. Sophomore Andy Fader (Everett, Wash./Cascade), an honorable mention all-academic pick last season, headlined the first team on the strength of a 3.41 pre-major GPA. Fader was joined by redshirt freshman Travis Boyd (Mukilteo, Wash./Mukilteo), winner of the 2003 Emerald City Invitational at Woodland Park, who boasts a 3.82 GPA in pre-business studies.

Also on the first-team was sophomore Laura Hodgson (Spokane, Wash./North Central), whose 3.90 GPA, in mathematics, is the team's highest. Hodgson won the 2002 Emerald City Invite, and was a key contributor at 5,000 meters for the Huskies this fall.

Three more Washington runners earned second-team acclaim, including senior men's captain Todd Arnold (Westport, Wash./Ocosta), sophomore Mark Mandi (Everett, Wash./Mariner) and junior women's captain Camille Connelly (Marysville, Wash./Marysville-Pilchuk.
