USC Defeats Seton Hall, 70-59, In Tournament Opener

FREEPORT, Bahamas -- Ebony Hoffman led with 20 points as the USC women's basketball team defeated Seton Hall, 70-59, in the first round of the Junkanoo Jam Grand Bahama Tournament on the island of Freeport on Friday. With the win, the Women of Troy (1-1) advance to the tournament championship and will face No. 13/11 Minnesota on Saturday at 8:50 p.m. EST.

USC took advantage of the Pirates' (2-1) 15 turnovers and 21 fouls in the second half to secure the lead. In the game, the Trojans scored 26 points off of Seton Hall turnovers and collected 19 points at the free throw line.

After briefly losing its halftime advantage early in the second period, the Women of Troy regained control on a three-pointer by Hoffman at 15:59 to go ahead 34-32. The Pirates came within one point, 36-35, shortly after (14:35), but it marked the final opportunity Seton Hall had to get back in the game.

USC extended its lead to 10 (45-35) at 10:20 and held off the Pirates for the remainder of the game.

Seton Hall led by as much as six points, 16-10, in the first half before a 9-to-2 scoring run gave USC its first advantage of the game, 19-18, with 3:47 remaining. Hoffman hit four-of-four free throws as the clock ran down to send Women of Troy into the break ahead 27-24.

In addition to Hoffman, guard Rometra Craig contributed 18 points and Meghan Gnekow led with nine rebounds.

Minnesota defeated Texas A&M 88-72 in Friday's tournament opener.
