Football Coach To Be Named Today

Nov. 29, 2003

TUCSON - University of Arizona President Peter Likins and Athletics Director Jim Livengood will hold a news conference at 1 p.m. Saturday to introduce a new head coach of the university's football program.

The news conference is for working media only and not open to the public.

The announcement will culminate a nine-week search following the Sept. 28 dismissal of former head coach John Mackovic. UA defensive coordinator Mike Hankwitz has been serving as head coach since.

Senior associate athletics director Kathleen LaRose chaired a 12-member panel that screened more than 100 prospects for the position. Livengood, Likins and LaRose led a team of officials that conducted five known interviews in the past weeks, talking with Hankwitz, Cincinnati Bengals linebackers coach Ricky Hunley, USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow, New York Giants defensive coordinator Johnnie Lynn and Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops.

Arizona finished the year with a 28-7 loss at Arizona State yesterday, ending the season with a 2-10 overall record and a 1-7 slate for 10th place in the Pacific-10 Conference. The overall mark was the program's lowest victory total and winning percentage in 36 years, since the 1957 club finished 1-8-1.
