Dec. 2, 2003
BERKELEY, Calif. - The Cal Golden Bears and women's gymnastics head coach Cari DuBois will welcome three new gymnasts to Berkeley next fall. Jessica Miyagi, Allison Szutu and Siobhan Luce all have signed National Letters of Intent with Cal.
Miyagi, an Auburn, Calif., native, has gone to Nationals the last three years at level 10. She placed top three in Regionals every year of high school.
'Just watching the team workout gets me excited about coming here,' said Miyagi. 'I have a lot to bring to Cal. These coaches can help me with my gymnastics career. This has been a dream since I was little.'
From Castro Valley, Calif., Szutu trained at Airborne Gymnastics in Santa Clara. As a level 10, performer, she went to Nationals and placed thirrd on bars and fourth on vault. At the State Championships she placed first on bars and floor.
'I'm really excited,' said Szutu. 'I grew up in Oakland and I really miss the urban setting. I really love the area Cal's in. I met Cari at West Virginia and she seems like a great coach. I'm really excited about [Cal assistant coach] Steve [Arkell] as a new coach too.'
Luce, from Foresthill, Calif., has been a level 10 gymnast for four years, which have included trips to Nationals the last three years in a row. She has produced first, second and third place finishes at State and Regional competitions.
'Cal's a great school,' said Luce. 'The gymnastics program is getting better. Cari has just pulled this team around. I hope that we can make it to Regionals and Nationals.'
DuBois is enthusiastic about working with acclaimed young talent next fall.
'All three of them are bringing national competitive experience to the program,' said DuBois. 'Jessica is very quick and dynamic, while at the same time displays elegance. Siobhan is an incredible performer. She caught my attention seven years ago when I was judging her on floor. Allison's skill execution and presentation will round out this recruiting class.'
