Cougar Swimmers Compete at U.S. Open

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Several members of the Washington State University women's swim team competed in day one of the U.S. Open, Thursday, Dec. 4.

The WSU 800 freestyle relay team marked the school's best finish with 21st place (8:43.55). The team consisted of freshmen Laurie Gregg, Erin McCleave, and Andria Giovanni, and senior Sasha Taylor.

Sophomore Jane Copland finished 66th in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:25.08. Australian native, McCleave, tied for 104th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.71

Former Cougar standout Lindsay Henahan is also competing in the open with the Arizona Desert Fox team. She tied for 77th in the 50 freestyle (27.39).

The meet consists of over 800 entries ranging from club teams, university teams, and future/former Olympians. The U.S. Open events are all in long course meters to prepare for the upcoming Olympic year.

At the end of day one (11 events), Canada holds first place with 209 points. The Irvine Novaquatics follow in second place with 144 points, while the University of Florida swim team is third with 135 points. For complete results, please go to

The U.S. Open continues Friday and concludes Saturday, Dec. 6. Preliminaries begin at 9 a.m. each day, with finals at 6 p.m. Other members of the WSU swim team are competing in the Central Washington University Wildcat Invitational in Ellensburg. Competition begins Friday, Dec. 5 and continues through Sunday, Dec. 7. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. each day, with finals at 5 p.m.
