Five Bruins Make the Finals at the U.S. Open

Federal Way, WA - In the first day of action at the U.S. Open (long course meters), held at the Weyerhauser-King County Aquatic Center, five Bruins advanced to the finals of their events. Overall, eleven UCLA swimmers are competing at the three-day event, which continues tomorrow and will conclude on Saturday, December 6.
Leading the way was senior Sara Platzer, the highest placing Bruin in today's competition. Platzer swam Olympic Trials qualifying times in the prelim and final of the 50m Free. In the final, she placed eighth in 26.24, after swimming 26.01 in qualifying. In the 400m Free, freshman Jane Imagane placed 12th in 4:19.70, a personal long course best. Also competing in the 400m Free final was freshman Katie Nelson, who placed 24th in 4:21.63. Senior Malin Svahnstrom made the final of the 200m IM, placing 13th in 2:19.89. And, senior Naoko Watanabe finished 13th in the 200m Back in 2:20.29 (2:19.10q).
Bruins competing in the preliminaries were senior Cathy Coler (200m IM, 81st, 2:26.26; 100m Breast, 65th, 1:15.84), sophomore Liz Keating (400m Free, 62nd, 4:29.02), senior Jackie Lobdell (400m Free, 30th, 4:23.88), junior Melissa Miller (400m Free, 58th, 4:28.69), senior Kristen Tinney (400m Free, 63rd, 4:29.25) and sophomore Kim Vandenberg (50m Free, 33rd, 26.95). Former Bruin All-American Beth Goodwin, competing for Irvine Novaquatics, placed 52nd in the 50m Free prelim in 27.17.
The U.S. Open will continue tomorrow, December 5, and conclude Saturday, December 6.
