Mercury's Kayte Christensen Hired as Women's Basketball Color Analyst

TEMPE, Ariz. - Phoenix Mercury forward Kayte Christensen has been hired as the women's basketball radio color analyst for the Sun Devil Sports Network, general business manager Brett Wallerstedt announced Thursday.

Christensen will join Vince Marotta on the broadcasts of the remaining home women's basketball games on ASU's flagship station, NBC 1190 AM.

'We are very excited to have Kayte Christensen join our basketball broadcasts,' Arizona State head coach Charli Turner Thorne said. 'Kayte is a dynamic player with a dynamic personality who will certainly complement Vince Marotta very well. I am extremely proud of our partnership with the Phoenix Mercury, and Kayte's presence on our broadcasts will undoubtedly help us all in our continuing efforts to promote women's basketball in the Valley.'

A 2002 graduate of the University of California-Santa Barbara, Christensen has played with the Phoenix Mercury for the last two seasons. She played in 30 games for the Mercury last year, starting 16 contests and averaging 6.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. Christensen was selected by the Mercury in the third round of the 2002 WNBA Draft.

A four-year letterwinner at UC-Santa Barbara, Christensen set the Gauchos' school record for career field goal percentage (.549). She was named the 2002 Big West Conference Player of the Year and averaged 14.5 points and 9.1 rebounds per game in her senior year. Christensen played at Modoc High School in Alturas, Calif., and was the 1998 California Division V Player of the Year.

Christensen wrote a weekly column for this fall on the reality show, 'The Bachelor,' entitled 'Confessions of a TV Addict' and did a series of 15 television interviews for an on-line show on during spring training last season. She also is a host of the Phoenix Suns' halftime show on Fox Sports Net Arizona.

Christensen will begin her stint as ASU's color analyst this weekend as the Sun Devils play host to the Wells Fargo Holiday Classic on Friday-Saturday, Dec. 5-6. ASU will face Western Michigan in the first game of the tournament at 6 p.m. Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena and either Montana State or Binghamton on Saturday.

Saturday's consolation game tips off at 4 p.m. followed by the championship game at 6:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. The Sun Devils have won the last two Wells Fargo Holiday Classic tournament titles and three of the last four.
