Dec. 6, 2003

PULLMAN, Wash. - Lindsey Egeland led a trio of Cougars who scored in double-digits with 14 points as Washington State captured a 56-49 win over Utah Valley State College in women's basketball action, Saturday at Friel Court.

Egeland primarily tallied her point total from behind the arc, going a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point territory. Jessica Perry added 12 points along with nine rebounds and Adriane Ferguson recorded 10 points off the bench for WSU. Kolleen Horton came off the bench to record six points and five rebounds, all in the second half.

The Cougars improved their record to 4-2 and have already equaled their total numbers of wins from the past two seasons.

UVSC out-rebounded WSU for the game 42-41 but the Cougars held the advantage on the boards in the second half 24-15.

'When we went to Kolleen Horton in the second half and she was a great spark for us,' WSU Head Coach Sherri Murrell said. 'We felt that she could hurt them with her size and that's what happened. We also did a great job in the second-half rebounding. We got some defensive boards that were critical.'

WSU struggled early, missing nine of it first 10 shots, and found itself down 28-25 at the half. After spotting UVSC the first bucket of the second half, the Cougars tied the game at 30 with 17:02 remaining on an Egeland trey and a bucket by Candace Fields.

Down 32-30 at the 16:28 mark, WSU went on a 6-0 run - with all the points accounted for by Perry - as the Cougars took the lead for good.

A Courtney Lynn trey pulled UVSC to within one at 40-39 with 9:16 remaining but Ferguson immediately responded with a 3-pointer of her own to give WSU a 43-39 lead at the 9:04 mark.

Kaydee Allred, who scored a game-high 16 points for UVSC, cut the Cougars' lead to 43-41 at the 8:12 mark but WSU put the game away with five consecutive points to take a 48-41 lead with 5:55 remaining. WSU was never threatened again.

WSU was without the services of Bianca McCall, who missed her second consecutive game with a concussion that she sustained in the second half of last Saturday's (Nov. 29) game at Baylor.
