Third Overtime Is A Charm For Beavers
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Kevin Field's short jumper with 49.3 seconds left putOregon State ahead for good and the Beavers went on to beat Kansas State 87-82in three overtimes Saturday night.
The loss snapped a season-opening four-game winning streak for Kansas State(4-1), making its only road trip of the Wildcats' first eight games.
Chris Stephens had 23 points for the Beavers (3-2), who snapped a nine-gamelosing streak against Big 12 opponents.
Tim Ellis tied it at 81 for the Wildcats before Field's jumper gave OregonState an 83-81 lead. Stephens hit four straight free throws for the finalmargin.
Jeremiah Massey had 23 points for Kansas State.
After trailing by as many as 14 points in the second half, the Wildcats tooktheir first lead in the second overtime, when Jarrett Hart hit a 3-pointer tomake it 78-77. Frank Richards' free throw for Kansas State tied it at 78 with1:34 left, leading to the third OT.
J.S. Nash's 3-pointer gave the Beavers a 72-69 lead in the first overtime,but Massey's jumper and free throw tied it again at 72 with 23.4 seconds to goand the Beavers were unable to answer.
Oregon State pulled out to their biggest lead of the game when Lamar Hurd'sslam dunk made it 42-28 in regulation.
But Massey's put-back tied it at 61 with 26.3 seconds to go, and the gamewent into overtime.
The Beavers jumped out to an early 18-9 lead on Jim Hanchett's jumper, butKansas State went on a 10-2 run to squeeze the margin to 20-9.
Oregon State answered with its own 11-4 run to go up 31-23 on Nash's layupand free throw. Hanchett's 3-pointer made it 34-25 at the half.
