McDaniel Named LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Coach of the Year

Dec. 8, 2003

BERKELEY, Calif. - California women's golf head coach Nancy McDaniel has been selected the 2003 Ladies Professional Golf Association Teaching and Club Professional Coach of the Year. The award is in recognition of the Golden Bears' success during the 2002-03 season.

'This definitely caps off a great 2002-03 season,' said McDaniel, who joined the LPGA T&CP membership in 1995. 'It is most appreciated because it comes from the LPGA. It is such a prestigious association, and I'm proud to be a part of it. This is something above and beyond what I thought would happen and was a really neat surprise and the end of a very fortuitous year.'

McDaniel, who is in her ninth season in Berkeley as Cal's founding coach, has led the Bears into the national spotlight in recent years. McDaniel's 2002-03 squad won five regular-season tournaments before winning the Pac-10 Conference title and the NCAA Central Regional. Cal tied for 14th at the NCAA Championships for its highest finish in school history.

Cal's success last season propelled McDaniel into several postseason awards in 2003, including National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Coach of the Year, Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Golfweek magazine's Coach of the Year and NGCA Western Regional Co-Coach of the Year. She was also named as the University of California's Athletic Alumni Association's Big C Society Coach of the Year.

Six of McDaniel's players were named to the 2003 All-Pac-10 teams and two went on to garner All-America status. Prior to taking over as head coach at the University of California, McDaniel, who is originally from Portland, Ore., was an established player of her own. She was a member of the LET from 1989-91 and the Asian Ladies Golf Tour from 1992-93 after graduating from the University of Washington in 1988.

The LPGA Coach of the Year Award presented by Steuben, established in 1980, is awarded annually to a woman golf professional who is actively engaged in teaching and/or coaching golf at the college, university or high school level.
