Nihan Anaz Named Pac-10 Player of the Week

BERKELEY, Calif. - California senior guard Nihan Anaz has been named the Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 1-7, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Anaz, from Istanbul, Turkey, was named MVP of the Oakland Tribune Classic after leading the Golden Bears to their own tournament title for the first time since 1998. In victories over Miami (Ohio) and Tulane, she averaged 20.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists.
On the weekend, Anaz shot 48.4 percent from the field (15-of-31), 50.0 percent from three-point range (2-of-4) and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the line. In the win over Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 6, she scored 18 points and added a career-high eight rebounds. In the title game win over Tulane on Dec. 7, she matched her career high of 22 points, scoring 16 in the first half, and tied her career high of five assists. In Cal's 76-69 loss at No. 5 Texas Tech on Dec. 1, Anaz also contributed 17 points and three assists, shooting 2-for-3 from three-point range. She leads the Bears with 17.1 points per game on the season.
Cal posts a 5-2 overall record for the first time since 1999-2000. The Bears are in the midst of a 12-day break for final exams, and will return to action on Dec. 19 when they host Nevada at 7 p.m.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Anaz and the 20th all-time selection for California. It also marks the Bears' first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor since Courtney Johnson was selected on Feb. 19, 2001, after posting a career-high 34 points in Cal's 82-73 win at Stanford.
