BEAR NCAA TOURNAMENT NOTES: Nationally No. 8 ranked California (25-6, 12-6) has advanced to the NCAA round of 16 for the first time in school history as a result of last week's 3-0 victories over Saint Mary's and Michigan in the NCAA first and second rounds at Haas Pavilion. The Bears will now face No. 11 ranked Georgia Tech (33-3) on Friday, Dec. 12 at 5 p.m. HST at Hawaii's Stan Sheriff Center. Cal, currently 25-6, finished with a 23-6 regular-season record, the best regular-season winning percentage (.793) in school history. The Bears also captured a school-record 12 Pac-10 matches and posted back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 1981-83. This fall has been record-breaking for Cal - winning 16 consecutive matches to start the season, defeating Stanford for the first time since 1982, earning its highest national ranking ever (No. 5 on Oct. 13), and now advancing further in postseason than any other team in school history. The Bears are the only school to force No. 1 ranked USC to five games this season as well, losing 3-2 Oct. 18 at Haas Pavilion. Cal features junior All-American Mia Jerkov (pronounced YAIR-cove), the Oct. 13 Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week, and the Sept. 8, Sept. 29, Oct. 13 and Oct. 27 Pac-10 Player of the Week. Jerkov, a 2003 All-Pac-10 selection, now has 1,358 career kills - third on the Cal all-time list. She leads the Pac-10 in points (6.71) and kills per game (5.97), and was the MVP of the Colorado State Coors Classic and the Golden Bear Invitational. Jerkov has led Cal to five consecutive regular- season tournament titles, carrying over from last season, and has been tournament MVP in all five of those competitions. She was featured in the Oct. 27 edition of Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd. Another conference leader is freshman setter Samantha Carter, who is second in the Pac-10 in assists per game (13.39). Carter is a strong candidate for Freshman All-America honors, tallying a school-record 1,500 assists with 22 service aces and 240 digs. Her 70 assists Oct. 11 versus Stanford are the most single-match assists in the conference this season.

CAL'S POSTSEASON HISTORY: Cal volleyball is competing in the NCAA postseason for the seventh time in school history. The Bears now own a 6-6 all-time record in the postseason, advancing to the round of 16 for the first time ever after losing in the second round on four occasions. In 2002, the Bears defeated Santa Clara, 3-1, in a NCAA first round match before falling to UC Santa Barbara, 3-0, in the second round in Santa Barbara. Prior to last season, Cal's last NCAA visit was in 1989 when it defeated Florida State, 3-1, in Tallahassee, before falling to Texas, 3-0, in Austin. The Bears also participated in the NCAA Volleyball Tournament in 1982, 1983, 1987 and 1988, finishing tied for ninth in the nation three times (1982 out of 28 teams, 1983 out of 28 teams and 1989 out of 32 teams). Cal competed in the 1981 AIAW national championship as well, placing 10th out of 12 teams, and the 1991 NIVC, tying for fifth place out of 20 teams.

2003 PAC-10 COACH OF THE YEAR Rich Feller: Rich Feller (81-66, .551 at Cal; career 380-233, .620) is in his fifth season as Cal's head coach. Feller came to the Bears after a stint as assistant coach for the USA National Team (1997-98) and 14 years as head coach at Colorado State (1983-96), leading the Rams to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and 12 Top 25 national rankings. He is the first coach to lead the Bears to postseason and an AVCA national ranking since Dave DeGroot in 1989.

CAL'S NO. 8 AVCA RANKING: The Bears have steadily been among the top teams in the USA Today/AVCA Top 25 poll, going from a No. 24 preseason ranking to their current No. 8 spot. Cal's No. 5 ranking on Oct. 13 was the highest in school history. The Bears' No. 24 preseason ranking was the third in school history (No. 12 in 1983 and No. 9 in 1989).

BEARS' NCAA TRAVEL PLANS/TICKET INFORMATION: The Bears will be departing for Honolulu from the San Francisco Airport on American Airlines flight 39 at 9 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10. The team and staff will be staying at the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel, 2470 Kalakaua Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96815 (808-922-2511). The Yellow Jackets, coached by Bond Shymansky (first year at GT), are led by 6-4 junior outside hitter Lauren Sauer (509 kills, .327). The Yellow Jackets are advancing to the round of 16 for the first time in school history and have a 6-6 all-time record in NCAA volleyball postseason play. The Bears have a 0-2 all-time record against No. 15 Illinois (26-6, defeated Murray State and Louisville, 3-0, in NCAA first and second rounds). The Bears last lost to the Fighting Illini, 3-0, Nov. 24, 1990 at the Banker's Classic in Stockton, Calif. Illinois, coached by Don Hardin (eighth year at UI), are led by 6-5 senior middle blocker Lisa Argabright (443 kills. .383). The Fighting Illini have a 21-14 all-time record in NCAA volleyball postseason play. Cal has a 0-7 all-time record against No. 2 Hawaii (34-1, defeated Idaho and Brigham Young, 3-0, in NCAA first and second rounds). The Bears last fell to the Rainbow Wahine, 3-0, Sept. 1, 1999 at Cal. Hawaii, coached by Dave Shoji (28th year at UH), are led by 6-0 senior outside hitter Kim Willoughby (667 kills, .383). The Rainbow Wahine own a 52-18 all-time record in NCAA volleyball postseason play, winning the NCAA title in1982, 1983 and 1987 .

BEARS AGAINST THE AVCA TOP 25: Competing in what is arguably the toughest volleyball conference in the nation - the Pac-10 - the Bears' 2003 schedule included six teams currently ranked in the USA Today/AVCA Poll. Cal has taken on No. 1 USC (0-2), No. 5 Stanford (1-1), No. 7 UCLA (0-2), No. 12 Colorado State (1-0), No. 13 Washington (2-0) and No. 19 Santa Clara (1-0). Cal competed against a total of 13 teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season, including Cal Poly, New Hampshire and Nevada, the three teams that competed at Cal during the 2003 Golden Bear Invitational. The five of the Bears' six losses this season have come against higher ranked teams.

CAL PLAYERS AMONG PAC-10 STAT LEADERS: The Bears feature five players - Jerkov, junior middle hitter Camille Leffall, junior outside hitter Gabrielle Abernathy, Carter and freshman libero Jillian Davis - who are among the stat leaders in the Pac-10. Jerkov is first in the conference in kills (5.97 kpg), first in points (6.71 ppg), third in service aces (.47 pg) and eighth in digs (3.28 dpg). Leffall is seventh in the Pac-10 in blocks (1.13 bpg) and seventh in hitting percentage (.344), while Abernathy is fourth in service aces (0.41 pg). Cal's freshman setter Carter is second in the Pac-10 in assists per game (13.39) and Davis is fifth in digs (3.41 dpg).

BEARS RECEIVE PAC-10 HONORS: Besides Cal coach Rich Feller being honored as 2003 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, the Bears had Jerkov named first team All-Pac-10 and Carter named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team. Cal had three other players earn conference recognition, as well. Leffall was Pac-10 honorable mention, and freshman libero Davis and freshman outside hitter Amanda Fox were honorable mention Pac-10 All-Freshman. Earlier, sophomore middle hitter Alicia Powers was named honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic.

YOUTH EXCELS FOR THE BEARS: Cal has received quality minutes from several young players. Davis leads the team with 382 digs and had 28 digs Nov. 7 at Stanford - the third most single-match digs in the Pac-10 this season. Fox recorded a career-high 14 kills Nov. 7 at Stanford and Nov. 17 at UCLA, and had 11 kills Oct. 18 versus USC. Sophomore Powers is also having a solid year, hitting .288 and is second on the team with 118 total blocks. She had a career-high 10 block assists Nov. 29 at Long Beach State. Sophomore outside hitter Jenna Brown, a member of the 2002 Pac-10 All-Freshman team, has been key as well. Against No. 7 UCLA and No. 1 USC Nov. 14-15 in Los Angeles, Brown combined for 20 kills with only three errors in 49 attempts for a .347 hitting percentage.

2002 ALL-AMERICAN Mia Jerkov: Cal returns four starters, five seniors and 11 players from the last year's 20-12 NCAA Regional squad, including 6-3 outside hitter Jerkov, the Bears' first All-American volleyball player since Sylvie Monnet in 1983. Jerkov was first team All-Pacific Region and first team All-Pac-10 in 2002. She was voted the MVP in all three of the Bears' 2002 tournament titles and was twice Pac-10 Player of the Week, including becoming the school's first-ever AVCA National Player of the Week on Oct. 21. In 2002, Jerkov recorded 30 or more kills in six matches, was the Pac-10 leader in points (635.0, combining kills, blocks and service aces) and kills (578), and established school records single-match kills (39) and kill attempts (91).

CAL PLAYERS IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Jerkov has established a single-season kill record (669), surpassing Tiffany Rochelle's 568 kills set in 1988. Jerkov is also first on the single-season kill attempt list (1,562) and has established school records for kills in a match (39, Oct. 17, 2002 versus Washington) and kill attempts in a match (91, Nov. 22, 2002 versus Stanford). Senior middle hitter Heather Diers tied a school record with 11 total blocks and the Bears established a new school record with 40 total team blocks Oct. 22, 2002 versus Saint Mary's. Leffall (2001- ) is currently the school record-holder with a .353 career hitting percentage and set a school mark for single-season hitting percentage (.381) as a freshman in 2001. Leffall also had 11 total blocks in a match, accomplishing the feat as a freshman Oct. 23, 2001 versus Santa Clara.

DID YOU KNOW? The Golden Bears featured Holly McPeak, the 1987 National Freshman of the Year, and Lisa Arce, Cal teammates from 1987-89. Both went on to be standout beach volleyball players. Mia Jerkov's father, Zeljko, is a seven-foot former Olympic basketball star for Yugoslavia, helping his country to a silver medal in the 1976 Montreal Olympics (losing to the United States) and a gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Senior defensive specialist Ashleigh Turner's mother, Linda Lehde, played for UCLA's 1974 AIAW national championship team.
