Bears Ranked No. 21 in Preseason Coaches Poll

Dec. 11, 2003

BERKELEY, Calif. - Cal is ranked No. 21 in the first women's gymnastics coaches poll of the year. Under 2003 Co-Pac-10 Coach of the Year and West Regional Coach of the Year Cari DuBois, the Bears reached the NCAA Regionals last season for the first time since 2001. Finishing No. 18 in the polls at the end of the 2003 season, the No. 21 preseason ranking this year is a product of DuBois returning the core of her team.

Junior sensation My-Lan Dodd, who qualified for NCAA Championships as an individual last year, is back and will lead the team along with seniors Karissa Chock and Stephanie Kim. Talented freshmen Elyse Wong, Justine Cephus and Isabel Garcia will have the opportunity to show what they can do when the season gets underway next month.

Seven Pac-10 schools made the preseason poll in all, each of which Cal will compete against. The Bears welcome No. 9 Arizona State on Jan. 23, No. 11 Oregon State on Jan. 30 and No. 1 UCLA on Feb. 13 to Haas Pavilion this season. On the road, Cal will face No. 15 Washington on Jan. 16, No. 17 Arizona on Feb. 6 and No. 6 Stanford on Feb. 20. The seven ranked Pac-10 schools were the most of any conference.

Cal kicks off its 2004 season at Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.
