Dec. 15, 2003

TEMPE, Ariz. - Under the direction of 24th-year head coach John Spini, the Arizona State women's gymnastics team is ranked ninth in the country by the GymInfo preseason coaches poll. ASU finished ninth in the nation last year after advancing to its ninth straight NCAA Championship.

The Sun Devils, who finished last year with a 10-4 overall record, enter the 2004 season led by senior All-America Maggie Germaine and All-Pacific-10 Conference performer Ashley Kelly.

ASU recorded seven of the top-10 team scores of all-time in 2003, including the top two (198.275 vs. Kentucky and 198.150 vs. UCLA). It also set five all-time event records and posted the top 11 all-around scores in school history.

Defending national champion UCLA was selected No. 1 followed by Georgia, Alabama, Utah and Michigan. ASU was the third-highest ranked team in the very competitive Pac-10 Conference behind UCLA and Stanford (No. 6). All seven Pac-10 schools landed in the preseason top-25 poll.

The Sun Devils open the 2004 season hosting Stanford at Wells Fargo Arena on Sunday, January 18 at 12:00 p.m.
