Ellis, Pennell Still Looking For A Place

Dec. 29, 2003

EVANSTON, Ill. - Oregon State 165-pounder Matt Ellis and 174-pounder Jed Pennell need one more win to assure themselves of placing after Monday's opening day of the Midlands Open wrestling tournament at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Oregon State was tied for 16th place in the team standings; Iowa State was first and Iowa was second.

The prestigious tournament includes not only many of the nation's top collegiate wrestlers, but also a large number of post-collegiate wrestlers now competing at the international level.

'We had pretty good performances at one time or another,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'This is a quality tournament, and we'll see a lot of these same kids at nationals. Every round, it's important to get out and see what we can do.'

Beaver 149-pounders Tony Hook and Orlando Perez, 157-pounders Brian Duhrkoop and Anthony Weber, and 197-pounder Jed Lowe also won matches before being eliminated. The tournament format allows each team 10 entries, which they can distribute over the weight classes in any way they wish.

Pennell, ranked 17th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News, was beaten by 13th-ranked Matt Herrington of Pennsylvania 12-8 in the second round after falling behind 8-2 in the first round; he came back for a pair of wins in the wrestleback bracket.

'He came back (against Herrington), but it was just too big a margin to expect to come all the way back,' Wells said.

Ellis took 19th-ranked Heston Johnson of Northern Iowa into overtime before losing 3-1 in the first round but came back for three straight wins in the wrestlebacks, including a pin.

'Matt really increased his intensity level and his shot percentage today,' Wells said. 'He elevated his amount of attacks, so he scored more points - he's trying to eliminate the one-dimensional wrestling.'

Wells was also pleased with Hook, who had a pin and a major decision among his three wins on the day before being eliminated.

'He started to open up and get after it - he's getting the picture,' Wells said. 'This is the first tournament this year he's done the things we've been expecting him to do.'

OSU's other entries at the tournament were 133-pounder Tim Norman, 184-pounder Dan Pitsch and heavyweight Jamie Rakevich.
