Stanford Wrestles Well at Prestigious Midlands Tournament

Jan. 1, 2004

Evanston, Ill. - Matt Gentry, ranked first in the Pac-10 for his weight class, took third place by defeating Matt Lebe of West Virginia 4-0 in the consolation finals. In an even more impressive performance, Gentry gave Chris Bono, an Olympic team hopeful, a strong test before falling very narrowly 8-7 in the semifinals. Gentry's overall record for the tournament was 5-1.

True freshman Tanner Gardner (125 lb) was impressive on the mats as he reached the third round before running into #1 seed Luke Eustice of Iowa, who was ranked second in the nation. Gardner fought the star wrestler to overtime before falling narrowly 4-2. With his strong performance, Gardner should receive national respect.

Imad Kharbush wrestled strongly in the 174 lb weight class, reaching the championship second round before running into 5th seed Noel Thompson of Hofstra. Ryan Hagen reached the 5th round of the consolation bracket by defeating teammate Kharbush in a 3-1 decision.

Illinois took the tournament title, narrowly beating out Iowa in the final standings.
