UCLA Announces Football Staff Changes

Jan. 2, 2004

Two UCLA football assistant coaches have been relieved of their duties, head football coach Karl Dorrell announced today.

Mark Weber and Gary Bernardi were informed in one-on-one meetings with Dorrell that they would no longer be members of the Bruin staff. Weber came to UCLA in 1997 and has coached the offensive line for seven years. Bernardi just completed his 10th season as coach of the tight ends and recruiting coordinator. Both will be paid through June 30, when their current contracts expire.

'This was an extremely hard decision to make, but one which I feel is necessary for the future of our program,' said Dorrell. 'Both Mark and Gary have made significant contributions during their tenure at UCLA and we appreciate their efforts. However, I feel these two areas must be more productive if we are to be successful and to accomplish that, I feel we need new leadership at these positions.

Dorrell will begin the search for new coaches immediately. 'Making changes is never easy, because it affects more than just the coaches, it affects their families,' he said. 'That being said, I have to do what I think is best for the long term future of the UCLA program.'
