Women's Basketball Rallies For 72-67 Victory Against USC

Jan. 4, 2004

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University's women's basketball team overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to knock off USC by a 72-67 margin in Sunday's Pacific-10 Conference action.

The Beavers (9-4 overall; 3-1 Pac-10) used a 14-0 run in the middle of the second half to take a 53-46 advantage at the 12:16 mark. The Women of Troy (5-6 overall; 2-1 Pac-10) would get no closer than within four points for the remainder of the contest.

Shannon Howell's free throw with just over one-minute remaining gave OSU its biggest lead at 70-60.

The Beavers shot 52-percent in the second frame, overcoming an icy 29-percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes.

'Our players really responded,' said OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra. 'They have been playing great basketball and when that happens, it makes other players on the team step up.'

Howell led the Beavers in scoring with 24 points, including a 15-for-19 clip from the free throw line. Senior post Brina Chaney recorded her 10th career double-double with 11 points and a season-best 12 rebounds - seven coming on the offensive glass. Chaney's four blocked shots raises her career total to 172 - just four shy of the OSU school record.

Mandy Close finished with 11 points, while Krystal Turner and Leilani Estavan added 10 points each.

Senior post Ebony Hoffman led USC with 14 points despite shooting just 7-of-20 from the field. Hoffman recorded her fifth double-double of the year after pulling down a game-high 16 rebounds.

Free throws proved to be the deciding factor in the game as OSU tallied 11 more points than the Women of Troy from the line.

USC used a 13-0 run to close out the final four minutes of the first half and take a 37-28 lead into the lockerroom.

'They (USC) are fierce competitors and it really took a lot of effort on our part to come back and win this game,' said Spoelstra.

Oregon State puts its three-game winning streak on the line when the Beavers travel to Eugene for Saturday's Civil War match-up with University of Oregon. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
