Football News and Notes: Powell, Pierce and Gordon to play in East-West Shrine Game

Jan. 6, 2004

Some news and notes on the Cardinal football team from the past few weeks include players in senior All-Star games, post-season honors for three Cardinal freshmen, one assistant coach departure and two players playing on Mike Montgomery's nationally-ranked basketball team.

Luke Powell, Brett Pierce and Amon Gordon will play for the West squad in the 2004 East-West Shrine Game on Saturday, January 10 at Pacific Bell Park. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN beginning with an 11:00 am (PT) kickoff.

Gordon, who announced his decision to forgo his final season of eligibility on December 18 and make himself available for the NFL Draft, is believed to be the first junior to play in the Shrine Game. Powell, named the team's co-MVP (with Oshiomogho Atogwe) finished his Cardinal career with 128 receptions for 2,080 yards and 14 touchdowns. A First-Team All-America as a punt returner in 2001, Powell was named Second-Team All-Pac-10 this season for the second time in his career.

Pierce, who started all 11 games for Stanford this season at tight end and recorded 11 receptions, caught 38 passes in his career for 391 yards and three touchdowns.

Earning post-season honors for All-Freshman teams were WR Mark Bradford, SS Trevor Hooper and OG Jeff Edwards. All three were named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team by the Sporting News while Bradford and Hooper were named to the Sporting News' All-America Third Team.

Both Bradford and fellow WR Evan Moore are playing for the Cardinal's nationally ranked basketball team. Since joining the basketball team in early December, Bradford and Moore have appeared in two games in a reserve role.

Defensive line coach Peter McCarty has departed the Cardinal coaching staff for a similar position at the University of Central Florida. McCarty, who coached Stanford's defensive ends the past two years, reunites with head coach George O'Leary, who was McCarty's head coach at Georgia Tech in 2001.
