No. 21 Cal Defeats Cal State Fullerton in Season Opener

Jan. 9, 2004

FULLERTON, Calif. - No. 21 Cal (1-0) used solid performances on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise to hold off a late Cal State Fullerton run on the floor exercise and emerge with a season-opening win at Titan Gym. The Bears beat the Titans for the third time in the last two seasons, this time by a margin of 193.125-192.625.

The Titans trailed by only four-tenths of a point after the first rotation, but a 48.975 on vault by the Bears increased their advantage after the Titans fell three times on bars, two of which had to be counted.

Solid beam and floor performances in the third rotation gave the Bears a near two-point advantage heading into the final rotation. Cal State Fullerton showed why it has been dominant on floor in years past but it was not enough to eclipse the all-around performance by Cal.

Senior co-captain Karissa Chock won two events, scoring a 9.900 on vault and a 9.875 on uneven bars. Both are new career bests. Junior teammate My-Lan Dodd captured the all-around with a score of 38.800. Senior co-captain Stephanie Kim was a close second notching a 38.775 in the all-around.

Cal heads to Seattle, Wash. next Friday, January, 16 to take on the host Washington Huskies and Sacramento State Hornets.
