Women's Basketball Drops Civil War Heartbreaker, 56-54
Jan. 10, 2004
EUGENE, Ore. - Brandi Davis' 19-footer from the right wing with 4.9 seconds remaining gave University of Oregon a stunning 56-54 victory against Oregon State in Saturday's women's basketball Civil War.
The Ducks (9-6 overall; 1-4 Pac-10) used a 19-9 run over the final 10 minutes of the game to rally for the victory and break the Beavers' (9-5 overall; 3-2 Pac-10) three-game Pac-10 winning streak.
'They made shots down the stretch and we didn't,' said OSU assistant coach Todd Corman. 'They hit a couple of baskets at key moments - (Brandi) Davis played well.'
Davis finished with 16 points, including 12 in Oregon's nine-minute run down the stretch.
The Beavers looked to be in control of the contest until Chelsea Wagner and Davis buried back-to-back 3-pointers with just over six minutes left, giving Oregon its first lead of the contest (48-47) since the opening seconds of the game.
Shannon Howell knotted the game at 50 after burying a 3-pointer with 5:10 remaining, and the teams exchanged baskets the rest of the way.
OSU senior post Brina Chaney recorded her 11th career double-double with 14 points and a season-high 13 rebounds (10 coming in the first half), while Howell poured in a game-high 24 points on 9-of-20 shooting. Howell has now scored 20 or more points in four of her five career games as a Beaver.
Oregon State managed just 35-percent (20-of-57) shooting for the game, including a season-low 1-for-11 clip from 3-point range. Oregon didn't fare much better, hitting just 39-percent (19-for-49) in the game but shot 57-percent in the second half.
The sloppy first half saw OSU hold a six-point cushion on five different occasions before the break and take a 26-23 lead into the lockerroom. The loss marked the first time on the season that the Beavers dropped a game that they led at the half (6-1).
Oregon State will face Washington State University on Thursday in Pullman, WA. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
