Beavers Visit No. 13 Arizona State

Jan. 14, 2004

FRIDAY, JANUARY 16Oregon State at No. 13 Arizona State; Tempe, Ariz.; 7 p.m. PST

For over a month, Oregon State has gone into each weekend of wrestling knowing it was going to have to wrestle anywhere from two to six matches in back-to-back dual meets and tournaments.

This week, the Beavers get a change of pace.

Oregon State (5-3 overall, 2-0 Pacific-10) has just one meet and it's a big one, as the Beavers visit 13th-ranked Arizona State (5-4, 1-0) for a Pacific-10 dual on Friday night.

'A clear focus - that's what we need,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'You're just wrestling seven minutes. This is when wrestling is a team sport - it's about winning at least five matches, minimizing the bonus points (for a major decision, technical fall or pin) for the other team and getting as many of them as you can for your team.

'They're the team from the Pac-10 that's ranked highest nationally, so it's very important that we go into their gym and compete well.'

The probable lineups show four matches where both teams could send out wrestlers who are ranked among the top five in their weight class in the Pac-10. That includes a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup at 174 pounds, where OSU's Jed Pennell is ranked first and ASU's Ron Renzi is ranked second.

Other weights where both wrestlers could be ranked in the Pac-10 are 125 pounds, where ASU's Christian Staylor is ranked second and OSU's Eric Stevenson third; 149 pounds, where ASU's Patrick Williams is ranked first and OSU's Tony Hook fifth; 184 pounds, where ASU's Nick Frost is ranked second and OSU's Dan Pitsch third; and heavyweight, where ASU's Cain Velasquez is ranked first and OSU's Jamie Rakevich fourth.

OSU 165-pounder Matt Ellis is also ranked first in the Pac-10, and both Ellis and Pennell moved up in this week's national rankings.

Ellis, who has won seven of his last eight matches, remained 16th in the Amateur Wrestling News rankings and moved from 15th to 13th in the InterMat rankings. Ellis leads OSU in victories with his 15-6 record and won all three of his matches last weekend.

Pennell, who has won six of his last seven matches, climbed from 16th to 15th in this week's AWN rankings and remained 15th on the IM list. He has a 13-6 record and his five pins are tied for the team lead with Stevenson.

Arizona State has seven wrestlers in the national rankings, as Staylor is ranked 20th by IM at 125; 133-pounder Mike Simpson is ranked ninth by both AWN and IM; Williams is ranked 11th by AWN and 13th by IM at 149; 157-pounder Brian Stith is ranked 20th by AWN and 15th by IM; Frost is ranked eighth by AWN and seventh by IM at 184; 197-pounder Ryan Bader is ranked fifth by AWN and third by IM; and Velasquez is ranked eighth by AWN and eighth by IM.

The Sun Devils are coming off a fourth-place finish in last week's Virginia Duals. ASU reached the semifinals only to be blanked by sixth-ranked Nebraska 37-(-1), then lost the consolation final on criteria to 21st-ranked Purdue when action ended with the score tied 20-20.

OREGON STATE ALL-TIME VS. THIS WEEK'S OPPONENT: Oregon State has an all-time record of 11-14 against Arizona State in a dual meet series dating back to 1970, but the Beavers are on a 1-meet win streak against the Sun Devils. Last season in Corvallis, OSU won the final 3 matches to knock off eighth-ranked Arizona State 18-16 in front of a crowd of 1,054 at Gill Coliseum. ASU's last win was in 2002 by a 25-10 score in Tempe.

OREGON STATE'S LATEST MEETS: Oregon State swept 4 dual meets last week. On Jan. 9, the Beavers traveled to the Oregon Wrestling Classic Duals in Redmond and won 3 times, then returned home to beat Northern Colorado on Jan. 11.

Oregon State 174-pounder Jed Pennell went 3-0 and recorded a pin at the Oregon Wrestling Classic Duals as OSU beat Army 24-13, Southern Oregon 24-19 and Cal State-Fullerton 21-13; the Beavers were also to have wrestled Air Force but weather prevented the Falcons from reaching the tournament. 'We missed a lot of opportunities to get major decisions (by eight points or more) and to put matches away,' Wells said. 'We let some guys off the hook just by not putting enough pressure on them. We need to increase our attempts and increase our offense on our feet. If we do that, we're going to separate ourselves from the rest of the crowd.' The Beavers varied their lineup in each of the duals in Redmond; only Pennell, 125-pounder Eric Stevenson and 141-pounder Kyle Larson wrestled at the same weight in all 3 meets. Going 2-0 for OSU were 133-pounder Tim Norman, 149-pounder Tony Hook, 165-pounder Matt Ellis and heavyweight Jamie Rakevich; Dan Pitsch won both his matches at 184 pounds but was beaten when he stepped up to 197 against Army.

Oregon State got pins from 125-pounder Eric Stevenson, 149-pounder Tony Hook and 174-pounder Jed Pennell in beating Northern Colorado 40-6. The Beavers scored team bonus points for a pin, technical fall or major decision in 6 of the 7 matches they won on the mat; OSU also received a forfeit win at heavyweight. OSU showed a little more aggression than it had displayed two days before. 'Much better,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'Just in getting that 12th point or fourth takedown or whatever we were trying to do. We scored more points, and that's what people want to see. We saw guys wrestle more aggressively Sunday ... they went out with more confidence, I think. By now, we've met some real good teams and we know we can come out and get after it and score points.'

OREGON STATE HEAD COACH Joe Wells: Joe Wells, who is in his 12th season as Oregon State's head coach, has led the Beavers to a Pacific-10 title and 4 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships during his time at OSU.

The Beavers' 25-10 win over then-No. 11 Boise State in 2001 was Wells' 100th dual meet win at OSU. Since taking over the Beaver program prior to the 1992-93 season, Wells is 130-80-1 for a winning percentage of .618.

The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships 4 times in Wells' tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in 1998.

Under Wells, OSU has had 2 national champions, 17 All-Americans and 21 conference champions.

Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.

Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a 2-time placer at the Big Ten meet and was the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.

OREGON STATE SECOND IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were second in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools going into the 2003-04 season. OSU currently has an all-time dual meet record of 864-272-24 and a .755 winning percentage.

OREGON STATE'S DUAL MEET SCHEDULE: OSU faces one of the nation's toughest dual meet schedules. The Beavers meet 7 teams ranked in the Jan. 13 National Wrestling Coaches Association poll: No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Nebraska, No. 8 Lehigh, No. 13 Arizona State, No. 22 Cal State-Bakersfield, No. 23 Cal Poly and No. 25 Boise State.

OREGON STATE IN GILL COLISEUM: Oregon State has one of the finest homes in college wrestling, 10,400-seat Gill Coliseum. Now in their 48th season in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers have a home dual meet record of 359-69-5 in the arena for a winning percentage of .835. This season, OSU is 2-1 at home with the loss coming to top-ranked Oklahoma State; the Beavers are averaging 896 fans per home meet.

OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 14 times, including 2002, and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980.

OREGON STATE WRESTLING HOMECOMING: Oregon State celebrated its annual OSU Wrestling Homecoming on Dec. 13 when the Beavers beat Oregon 23-18 in front of 1,132 fans and legendary former OSU coach Dale Thomas. There were 25 former OSU wrestlers on hand; during their Oregon State careers, they accounted for 35 individual conference championships, 25 All-America finishes and 7 national championships.

RAKEVICH GOES FROM THE CLOCK TO A PIN: As Jamie Rakevich noted, a teammate's injury isn't the way anybody wants to get into the starting lineup. But presented with the chance, the redshirt freshman made the most of it.

Rakevich, who started the season as OSU's No. 2 heavyweight, was helping run the scoreboard the night of Dec. 13 as the Beavers beat Oregon 23-18 at Gill Coliseum. That gave him a front-row seat for the meet's grotesque ending, as Beaver heavyweight Ty Watterson suffered a broken arm when he and Oregon's Cody Parker went out-of-bounds in a first-period scramble.

That thrust Rakevich into the starting lineup for the next afternoon's meet against top-ranked Oklahoma State. Oregon State was being shut out going into the dual-ending heavyweight match, but Rakevich came up with a pin of ninth-ranked Willie Gruenwald in 1:46 to put the Beavers on the board.

STEVENSON FACES BIG CHALLENGES IN FIRST TWO MEETS: After the way Eric Stevenson started the season, things could only get easier.

Stevenson, a redshirt freshman 125-pounder, began his varsity career in OSU's season-opener at No. 8 Nebraska on Nov. 15. His opponent? The nation's top-ranked wrestler at that weight, senior Jason Powell. Powell pinned Stevenson in 2:39.

A week later at the Southern Oregon Open, Stevenson reached the finals. Who was waiting for him? Two-time freestyle world champion Vougar Ourdjov, who is now coaching at Lassen Community College. Ourdjov took a 4-1 decision over Stevenson.

Stevenson must be a quick study. In his next match, he upset ninth-ranked Mario Stewart of Lehigh 10-2 at the Hawai'i Duals and moved into the national rankings.

PEREZ SCORES PERHAPS FASTEST BEAVER PIN EVER: Orlando Perez may have scored the quickest pin in Oregon State wrestling history at the Southern Oregon Open on Nov. 22. The sophomore 149-pounder flattened Oregon's Tim Bargis in just 7 seconds in the wrestleback preliminary round. Said OSU head coach Joe Wells: 'I was walking over to the mat for his match, and when I got there they were already shaking hands.'

Previously, the quickest pin ever by a Beaver was believed to be Jason Buce's 8-second bout against Simon Fraser's Jason Bennett in a 1998 dual meet.

WRESTLER PROFILE NOTES: In the individual notes for each Oregon State wrestler that follow, 'team bonus points' refers to a wrestler scoring additional team points for a major decision, technical fall, pin, forfeit or default. If there is a number in parentheses ahead of the name of an opponent, that number refers to the opponents' national ranking by Amateur Wrestling News at the time of the match. Records and results include only matches against wrestlers from NCAA and NAIA schools.
