No. 7 Bruins Blank UC Irvine in Season Opener, 7-0

Jan. 14, 2004

LOS ANGELES - Playing its first dual match since the NCAA Semifinals last May, the No. 7 UCLA men's tennis team looked impressive in its 2004 season opener Wednesday, downing UC Irvine, 7-0 in a non-conference showdown at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

The Bruins set the tone in doubles play, winning all three matches to claim the one point awarded for doubles play. The highlight of the afternoon came at No. 1 doubles, where 36th-ranked Alberto Francis and Kris Kwinta of UCLA upset UC Irvine's Jonathan Endrikat/Brian Morton, 8-5. Endrikat and Morton are ranked No. 6 nationally in the latest ITA Doubles Rankings.

Francis was equally impressive in singles play, as he was off the courts following a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Ryusuke Kashiwabara at the No. 3 spot. Kwinta then gave the Bruins a 3-0 lead after his 6-3, 6-2 victory over Morton at No. 4 singles.

UCLA's top player Tobias Clemens clinched the match for UCLA at the top position when he dispensed of UCI's Zoran Korac, 6-3, 6-3.

With the match already decided, UCLA's Philipp Gruendler, Chris Lam and Aaron Yovan each posted straight-set victories. Wednesday was the dual-match debut for both Gruendler and Kwinta

UCLA heads to the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Thousand Oaks this weekend. Clemens is the two-time defending singles champion at that event. The Bruins' next dual match will be against Fresno State on Jan. 22 at the Los Angels Tennis Center. Match time is 1:30 p.m.
