Cougars Fall to Oregon State 62-51

Jan. 15, 2004

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's Adriane Ferguson scored 10 points in the Cougars' 62-51 defeat to the Oregon State Beavers in Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action, Thursday at Friel Court.

The loss dropped WSU to 4-12 overall and 0-7 in the Pac-10. OSU improved to 10-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

Ferguson's point total marked the second consecutive double-digit point effort, and the fourth overall this season, for the freshman from Spokane, Wash. She also led the Cougars with five boards. Lindsey Egeland added nine points and four rebounds to the Cougars' cause.

Krystal Turner turned in a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds for Oregon State. The Beavers were led by a game-high 14 points from Hollye Chapman while Brina Chaney added 12 for OSU.

WSU jumped out of the gates quickly scoring the game's first eight points. OSU would whittle away at the deficit but the Cougars held onto their lead for the majority of the first half.

With WSU up 26-25 at the 3:26 mark, a Chapman bucket gave OSU its first lead of the game at 27-26 with 2:45 remaining in the first half.

The Cougars went into the break with the lead however, as a Kolleen Horton lay-up with three seconds left gave WSU a 29-28 advantage at the half.

That would be the score until Turner's bucket with 17:40 remaining gave Oregon State a 30-29 lead.

Although the Cougars would be within one on four occasions in the second half - the last being at 42-41 with 9:45 remaining - WSU never enjoyed the lead again for the remainder of the game.

The Cougars shot 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) in the first half but cooled off to 7-of-25 (28 percent) in the second half. Conversely, OSU was 9-of-25 (36 percent) in the first half and 14-of-32 (43.8 percent) in the second half.

'Oregon State played zone (in the first half) and we were doing a really good job against it,' WSU Head Coach Sherri Murrell said. 'We were scoring against it; they stayed in it, and that's where a lot of our scoring was coming from. They went back to man in the second half, they took us out of our sets, and we couldn't score.'

WSU returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. against Oregon at Friel Court.
