UCLA Drops Dual Meet To Arizona, 196.725-194.625
Jan. 16, 2004
Tucson, Ariz. - UCLA dropped a road dual meet to Arizona Friday evening, 196.725-194.625, but gained much more than it lost, as many gymnasts made solid season debuts. Particularly impressive in her first meet of the season was hometown favorite Jamie Williams, who recorded a career-high 9.9 on beam and scored a 9.775 on floor.
Williams, who attended Sabino HS in Tucson, Ariz., started her meet with a solid 9.775 on floor, which tied for team-high honors. In UCLA's final rotation on beam, Williams recorded her first career 9.9 score, with her only deduction being a hop on her dismount.
Several first-time competitors made big impressions, including Kisha Auld, who tied for fourth with a 9.875. It was her first time in competition in five years. After sitting out last week's meet with an injury, freshman Ashley Peckett returned to all-around competition and earned a 9.875 on vault and, along with Williams, was UCLA's top scorer on floor with a 9.875. Freshman Michelle Selesky earned a 9.475 on floor exercise, and Aimee Walker, who competed exhibition bars in the season opener, competed on bars and scored a 9.775. Sophomore Jennifer Sutton, who did not compete in 2003 due to injury, scored a 9.325 on vault and then retuned in an exhibition turn to hit a solid 9.675.
'I was extremely pleased of the performances our student-athletes had this evening,' said UCLA head coach Valorie Kondos Field. 'For a number of them, the skills on every event they competed today were skills they learned in September.'
UCLA will next travel to 10th-ranked Georgia for a Monday, Jan. 19 meet against the Gym Dogs.
