Gymnasts Finish Second Friday At Berkeley Meet

Jan. 24, 2004

Arizona State University's gymnastics team went on the road for the first time in 2004 and tuned in a sub-par performance, finishing second of four teams at the University of California's Invitational meet Friday. Host California won the meet, scoring 195.95. The Sun Devils were second (194.25), followed by Utah State (194.15) and San Jose State (193.875).

The Sun Devils suffered numerous falls, including one on vault by senior Maggie Germaine (8.525), two on balance beam by senior Amber Giorgianni (9.125) and freshman Cassandra Jusino (9.2) and one on floor by Ashley Kelly (9.25).

ASU's top finisher on vault was Kelly with a 9.85, good for third-place. Cal's Karissa Chock won the event with a 9.5. My-Lan Dodd of Cal was second (9.875).

Kelly tied for first on the uneven bars with a 9.9 with Cal's Dodd and Utah State's Alexandra Martin.

Kelly and Dodd tied for first again on balance beam with 9.9's. This discipline is where ASU suffered two falls on the third and fourth routines by Giorgianni and Jusino. Sophomore Lauren Powell posted a 9.725 while teammates Kari Muth scored a 9.675 and Germaine a 9.625.

Dodd won the floor exercise with a score of 9.95. Jusino placed second (9.9).

SID Note: The meet at Cal did not begin until 8:30 p.m. Arizona time Friday night. A four-team meet, it was not completed until very late. Then, California's Media Relations Office had difficulties with the computer scoring and all scores had to be tabulated by hand. ASU did not receive an NCAA Scoresheet until early Saturday morning and then it was unreadable. I spoke with assistant coach Shelly Eaton on Saturday morning and received the correct scores. Thank you for your patience.
