Pennell Makes Mark In Beavers' Win
Jan. 25, 2004
PORTLAND, Ore. - Jed Pennell made his way onto Oregon State's all-time top 50 lists for career wins and career pins as the Beavers beat Portland State 49-0 in Pacific-10 wrestling Sunday night at the Stott Center. Pennell, a senior 174-pounder, scored one of OSU's three pins as the Beavers (8-4 overall, 4-1 Pac-10) completed a sweep of their three meets this weekend.
Also scoring pins for Oregon State against the Vikings (1-6, 0-4) were 141-pounder Kyle Larson and 184-pounder Dan Pitsch. OSU has won seven of its last eight duals; the Beavers had beaten 21st-ranked Cal State-Bakersfield 22-14 earlier Sunday at Gill Coliseum, handing the Roadrunners their first dual loss of the season.
Oregon State will wrap up its home schedule on Saturday at 2 p.m. when it meets Wyoming in a non-league dual. Pennell and 165-pounder Matt Ellis, both ranked 15th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News and first in the Pac-10, will carry eight-match win streaks into that meet.
And Pennell will wrestle his final home meet as one of OSU's career leaders. Pennell's 63 career wins tie him for 50th on OSU's all-time career wins list with Steve Lander (158/167/177 pounds, 1987-90); his 13 career pins tie him with Ben Richards (118/133 pounds, 1998-2001), Scott Cardwell (142/150 pounds, 1982, 84-86) and Joe Kittel (126/134 pounds, 1973-76) for 49th place on the OSU all-time list.
'That's excellent,' OSU head coach Joe Wells said. 'Jed has been real solid for us week-in and week-out. He and Matt are doing a great job as captains, and I think that's been a big factor in how our guys are responding lately.'
Pennell's pin, which came in 2:16 over PSU's Josh Gustafson, was his sixth of the season, tops among the Beavers. He's 17-6 this season and has won 10 of his last 11 matches.
Ellis won a major decision over PSU's Devin Mair by an 11-3 score. Ellis is 19-6 this season and has won 14 of his last 17 matches.
Pitsch's win was his seventh straight as he improved to 12-8 this season. Scoring a technical fall for the Beavers was 157-pounder Orlando Perez, while heavyweight Jamie Rakevich also earned a major decision.
'It wasn't the same kind of team we wrestled this afternoon; Portland State is down a bit this year,' Wells said. 'They forfeited at 133 and 149 pounds, so we went into the meet 12 points ahead. But the guys responded well and came out and scored a lot of points.'
At 125 pounds, OSU's Eric Stevenson broke out of a tie going into the third period to take a 9-3 win over the Vikings' Zac Enoch. Beaver 197-pounder Steve Grayson also earned a decision, beating PSU's Allen Kennett 11-8.
'That was a heck of a match,' Wells said. 'Steve did a nice job of staying in and wrestling all the way through the seven minutes; he hasn't had much experience and he's coming off an injury, so he did a nice job.'
