No. 26 Cal Baseball Defeats BYU, 11-1, in 2004 Season-Opener at Evans Diamond

BERKELEY, CA - Paced by a 14-hit attack including two, two-run homers by freshman left fielder Brennan Boesch, the Cal baseball team defeated BYU, 11-1, Thursday in the 2004 season opener at Evans Diamond. Boesch hit a two-run homer in his first collegiate at-bat in the second inning off of Cougar starter Paul Jacinto (0-1, 6.7 innings, eight hits, six runs, three earned runs, one walk, four strikeouts), and then hit a two-run homer in the Bears' five-run eighth inning. Also in the eighth, senior center fielder David Weiner hit a two-run homer off of BYU reliever Tyler Heid, followed by a solo homer by senior right fielder Brian Horwitz off of Cougar reliever Joshua Barrett.

The winning pitcher for Cal was senior starter Matt Brown (1-0), who pitched 6.0 innings with five hits, one run, one walk and one strikeout. Junior Mike Padgett earned the save in impressive fashion, pitching 3.0 innings with no hits, no runs, no walks and four strikeouts.

The Bears jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on Boesch's two-run shot to left field. BYU came back with a run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly to center field by Tim Law, scoring Kary Knell, who was hit by a Brown pitch to lead off the inning.

That was all the game's scoring until Cal exploded for four runs in the seventh inning and five runs in the eighth inning. Key hits for the Bears in the seventh were RBI doubles by Weiner, senior catcher Chris Grossman and junior first baseman James Holder. In the eighth, the left-handed hitting Boesch pulled the ball over the right field fence, the left-handed Weiner pulled hits homer to right and the right-handed hitting Horwitz hit his home run to left field. Freshman pinch hitter Chris Errecart hit a double in his first collegiate at-bat in the eighth as well.

Other top hitters for Cal included Holder, who was 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI; junior second baseman David Nicholson, who was 2-for-5; and freshman designated hitter Jordan Karnofsky, who was 2-for5 with a double.

Cal will next face BYU in the second game of the series, Friday, Jan. 30 at 1:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
