Cal (6-1, 2-1) Upsets No. 20 Oregon State
Jan. 30, 2004
Berkeley, Calif. - The Cal Golden Bears kept their hot home streak going with a second consecutive outright win at Haas Pavilion, this time over Pac-10 rival and No. 20 Oregon State, 195.675-195.550. The victory was the third win over the Beavers for Cal in the two schools' 28th meeting.
The issue was very much in doubt late in the meet. The Beavers took a slim .200 advantage into the final rotation. Fortunately, the Bears saved their best for last, scoring a 49.175 on floor. It was enough to edge out Oregon State, which managed a 48.85 on the beam.
The meet was a see-saw affair throughout. Oregon State took the early lead after the first rotation by .400. The Bears came back to claim the lead with a strong bars score of 48.875, coupled with the Beavers 48.3 vault performance. It was Oregon State back ahead again after the third rotation. The Beavers' impressive floor exercise of 49.3 gave them a .200 advantage over the Bears, who had just manufactured a 48.925 on beam. But Cal's impressive floor demonstration of 49.175, only .100 off the fifth best floor team score in Golden Bear history, was enough to win.
Karissa Chock was impressive for the second straight week in the all-around. The senior co-captain set her personal best with a 39.225. She was edged by Oregon State's Chelsea Plourde, who won her second straight all-around. Junior My-Lan Dodd was as steady as they come. Her 39.075 all-around, featured three scores above 9.8.
The Bears got off to a good start behind the vault of Lauren Shipp. Shipp tied a California record when she posted a 9.95. Monique Chang excelled on bars during the second rotation, when she posted a meet-leading a 9.875. Miho Maeda, competing in her first ever all-around, notched a respectable 38.075
Cal returns to action next Friday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 against Pac-10 adversary Arizona. The Bears return home to the friendly confines of Haas Pavillion the following Friday, Jan. 13, to take on UCLA and Seattle Pacific.
