Gehring, Muai Win at Cougar Indoor Track & Field Meet

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State University throwers Tim Gehring and Marie Muai won the weight throws and the Cougar men's distance medley relay team won at the tape Friday night at the Cougar Indoor Track & Field Meet, held at the WSU Indoor Practice Facility.

Gehring, a senior from Kettle Falls, Wash., won the men's 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 57-feet, 1-inch while Muai, a junior from Tacoma, Wash., threw the 20-pound weight 59-0 3/4.

Freshman Chris Williams (Federal Way, Wash.), running the final leg of the Cougar distance medley relay team of Steve Barrus (senior, Clovis, Calif.), Jon Manthey (junior, Federal Way, Wash.) and Chris Concha (freshman, Reno, Nev.), made a charge in the final 30 meters of the race to out-lean the DMR team from Cal State Northridge. WSU's final time was 10:17.60 and Cal State Northridge's time was 10:17.63.

Northridge did have the winning men's long jumper in Jason Romero who soared 24-3 1/2 and set a meet record. Cougar junior transfer, Alex Jones (Clovis, Calif.), leaped 23-2 1/2 for second place.

University of California Berkeley's Brooke Meredith won the women's pentathlon with a point total of 3,937 while WSU sophomore Diana Pickler (Sachse, Texas) finished second with 3,734 points. Both women reached NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks.

After the first four events in the men's heptathlon, Phil McMullen, running for Nike, was in the lead with 3,094 points while WSU's David Turpin (senior, Oakhurst, Calif.) was the top collegian with 2,942 points. The final three events - the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m run, will be contested Saturday.

Competition between athletes from Cal, Cal State Northridge, Idaho and WSU continues Saturday with the remaining field and all the running events. Admission to the Indoor Practice Facility is $5 per person and the first event begins at 9 a.m.
