Softball Opens Season With 6-0 Win Over Santa Clara Before Falling To Long Beach State 5-1

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A first inning two-run blast from sophomore Vanessa Iapala let the Beavers roll to a 6-0 win over Santa Clara University Friday morning, before dropping a 5-1 decision to Long Beach State on the opening day of the UC Santa Barbara Early Bird Tournament.

In game one, junior Kelly Petersen knocked in two runs, while sophomore Adrienne Alo scored off Iapala's homer. The Beavers held Santa Clara to one hit behind senior hurler Monica Hoffman, who improved to 1-0 on the season. Freshman Ta'Tyana McElroy came in to close in the 5th inning and allowed no hits.

'The first game was a great way to open the season,' OSU head coach Kirk Walker said. 'Monica threw extremely well. She was in control of her pitches. Offensively we came out very focused and aggressive.'

Santa Clara had a chance to jump on the scoreboard, but freshman outfielder Natalie Johnson made a catch over the wall to preserve the shutout.

'I'm not sure how to describe it,' OSU assistant coach Crissy Buck said, 'but it was just awesome.'

The Beavers left their comfort zone in game two, while the 49ers struck gold at home plate. Freshman Brianne McGowan tossed four innings for Oregon State, allowing two runs. Junior reliever Amy Klever stepped in and allowed the last three runs to be scored. Freshman Mia Longfellow highlighted all hitters with two doubles on the day.

'The second game was difficult,' Walker said. 'We had a freshman on the mound with her first outing for us, and it was hard to get comfortable. The freshmen as a whole learned a lot, and realized the importance of their mental game.'

The Beavers continue play Saturday, leading off with Illinois-Chicago at 9 a.m. and finishing with UC Santa Barbara at 11:30 a.m.
