Stanford Captures Title at USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships

MADISON, Wis. (ITA) - Top-seeded Stanford beat No. 2 Georgia 5-0 Sunday to win its record seventh title at the U.S. Tennis Association/IntercollegiateTennis AssociationNational Women's Team Indoor Championships at the University of Wisconsin's A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Stanford surpasses Florida for most titles won at this event, which began in 1988. The Cardinal won the doubles point, then got wins in singles from Alice Barnes, Lauren Barnikow, Theresa Logar and Emilia Anderson. Logar, a freshman who played in the U.S. Open last summer, beat Jitka Schonfeldova 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 5 to clinch the win.

The bottom of the Stanford singles lineup came up big once again. Barnikow, Logar and Anderson, who play Nos. 4-6 in the Cardinal singles lineup, all went 4-0 this week.

Stanford (6-0) also won USTA/ITA titles in 1989, 1990, 1993, 1998 and 2000-01. Stanford also beat Georgia in the 2001 final.

'Georgia was a really good contest for us today, as it always is in a Stanford-Georgia match,' Stanford head coach Lele Forood said. 'We're just happy about where we're at right now. This tournament is always a good test for us.'

Stanford beat Washington in Saturday's semifinals and UCLA in the quarterfinals. It opened with a victory against William & Mary inThursday's first round. Stanford improves to 54-10 and 8-1 against Georgia in 17 USTA/ITA appearances.

Only four schools have won the USTA/ITA title in the tournament's 17-year history: Stanford (7), Florida (6), Georgia (3)and Duke (1).

Stanford sophomoreAmber Liu, the 2003 NCAA singles champ,received the USTA Sportsmanship Award on Saturday.
