No. 4 Cal Finishes Ninth at Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - No. 4 California shot a 312 Wednesday in the final round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge to finish the 15-team tournament in ninth place with a 925. However, only six strokes separated the Golden Bears from fourth-place Arizona (919) at the par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club.
No. 3 UCLA led wire to wire and won the team title by 32 shots over No. 6 New Mexico. The Bruins fired a 297 on Wednesday - their third straight round under 300 - to finish at 876. The Lobos turned in a final score of 304 and a three-day score of 908. No. 13 Ohio State, the tournament host, was third at 914.
UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas and Susie Matthews grabbed the top two spots in the individual race. Mayorkas led after each round and her three-round score of 207 gave her a 10 shot victory over Matthews and Julie Tvede of Tulsa.
Senior Claire Dury posted or tied for Cal's best round each day (72-77-75) and concluded the tournament in a tie for 11th place at 224. Sophomore Sophia Sheridan had a solid event, tying for 22nd at 229 (74-77-78). Senior Sarah Huarte rallied from an opening round of 81 to shoot two rounds of 77 to take 43rd at 235.
Cal was without Sofie Andersson, one of its top golfers, who didn't play because of a back injury. She is expected to return to the lineup soon.
The Bears' next competition is Feb. 23-25 at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz.
