No. 22 Softball Wins Both Games At The Louisville Slugger Tournament; Complete Games Scores
Feb. 20, 2004
TEMPE, Ariz. - Pitcher Desiree Serrano fired a two-hit shutout against Wisconsin and Sharee Zaleski hit a three-run home run to cap a furious come back against Utah State to help carry the 22nd-ranked Arizona State softball team (12-5) to a 4-0 and 7-6 win Friday at the Louisville Slugger Classic Tournament at Farrington Stadium.
Against the Badgers, the Devils broke on top first with an unearned run. ASU then tagged on another run in the fourth inning, while Heidi Knabe knocked her first career home run in the fifth inning to extend ASU's lead to 3-0. The Devils ended the scoring in the seventh when Valerie Sevilla singled to center field, but the UW centerfielder misplayed the ball as it rolled all the way to the fence for a two-base error allowing Kristin Farber to come home.
Serrano gave up a leadoff single and one other single in the fifth inning, while striking out 10 Badgers. It marks Serrano's third shutout of the year and improves her record to 6-0.
In the first game against Utah State, ASU fell behind early as the Aggies took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning when the Devils put two up on the board. Sevilla doubled and then came home on an error by the right fielder. Phelan Wright then came home on a wild pitch by the Aggies Leslie Higley.
However, Utah State recorded three more runs, two from a double off the bat of Michell Vlahos. ASU then countered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth when Zaleski drilled her first career home run over the center field fence. The home run was estimated at 235 feet.
The Devils then capped the mad come back in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Knabe walked and then moved to second when Werschky singled to left field. Zaleski also drew a walk to load the bases. Katie Cobos followed with a dramatic game-winning single up the middle to score both Knabe and Werschky for the win.
Bre DeSanta (3-2) picked up the win in relief of Werschky, working three and two-thirds innings with six strikeouts.
Up next, the Devils will continue tournament play at Farrington Stadium on Saturday against 18th-ranked Iowa at 4:00 p.m. and Illinois State at 6:00 p.m.
