Feb. 21, 2004
TEMPE, Ariz. - The 22nd-ranked Arizona State softball team (13-6) split its two games Saturday at the Louisville Slugger Classic Tournament, falling to 18th-ranked Iowa, 9-0, then bouncing back to defeat Illinois State, 9-3. The Sun Devils hold a 3-1 record heading into Sunday's final two games.
Against Illinois State, the Devils put the game away right off the bat in the bottom of the first inning as they scored seven runs. Kristin Farber and Valerie Sevilla each singled, then Phelan Wright doubled both in for the quick 2-0 lead. With two outs Trisha Tornberg singled to right field to drive in Wright and then with the bases loaded, Keri Pulcifer hit a grand slam, the second in her career to push the lead to 7-0.
Sevilla followed with another run in the second when she hit her team-leading fourth home run of the year, a solo shot over the right centerfield fence. The Redbirds then avoided the shutout when Serena Cruz hit a two-run homerun for the 8-2 score. In the fourth, Sevilla tacked on another RBI when she singled home Farber who earlier singled and stole her 14th straight base of the year.
ISU tallied one more run in the seventh off of another solo home run by Emily Krugar. Desiree Serrano (7-0) went the distance, allowing nine hits and three runs with a season-high 13 strikeouts. Farber, Sevilla and Wright all had three hits each as ASU pounded out season-high 15 hits.
In the first game of the day, Iowa scored three times in the first off ASU starter Ashley Werschky. After a single and a fielder's choice, Ali Arnold doubled home both runs and Sarah Thomson singled home the other run. The Hawkeye's then ended the game in the bottom of the fourth when they plated six runs, three more from Arnold's home run.
The Devils could only get five hits off of Arnold as the game ended in five innings.
Up next, the Devils will conclude tournament play at Farrington Stadium on Sunday against 18th-ranked Iowa at 10:00 a.m. and Utah State at 12:00 p.m.
