Cal Baseball Falls to No. 1 Stanford, 10-3

Feb. 28, 2004

BERKELEY, CA - Stanford scored four runs with two outs in the top of the third inning and went on to cruise to a 10-3 non-conference victory over Cal Saturday at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears fell to 7-8 on the year, while the top-ranked Cardinal improved to 12-2. Stanford won the first game of the series, 12-9, Friday.

In the third inning with no score, Cal pitcher Adam Gold (3-1, 6.0 innings, seven hits, six runs, two earned runs, one walk, four strikeouts) had two outs when he gave up a double to right-center to Sam Fuld. Fuld then advanced to third on a passed ball by Bear catcher Garrett Bussiere. The Cardinal's Jonny Ash followed with a bunt that was thrown away to first by Bussiere, scoring Fuld and extending the inning. From that point, Jed Lowrie had an RBI double to left center that bounced out of left fielder Justin Nelson's glove when he hit the fence, and Danny Putnam followed with a two-run homer to left for a 4-0 lead.

Bussiere got the Bears on the board with a home run in the bottom of the third, but Stanford would go on to score single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings, and three runs in the seventh inning. The winning pitcher for the Cardinal was sophomore right-hander Jeff Gilmore (3-1, 7.0 innings, six hits, three runs, no walks, two strikeouts). Freshman Jeff Simpson threw the final two innings for Stanford (no hits, no runs, one walk, two strikeouts).

Cal got two runs in the fifth inning to get within 5-3 on a RBI double by senior third baseman Jeff Dragicevich and a sacrifice fly by senior center fielder David Weiner, but the Cardinal scored in each of the next three innings, including three runs in the seventh.

Dragicevich finished the day 2-for-3 with two doubles and a RBI. Top hitters for the Cardinal were Putnam (3-for-5, HR, two RBI), Lowrie (2-for-3, double, three RBI) and Ash (2-for-5). Brian Hall had a two-run double in the seventh for Stanford.

The Bears will next host No. 1 ranked Stanford in the third game of the three-game non-conference series, Sunday, Feb. 29 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
