Golden Bear Men Finish Second, Women Sixth at MPSF Indoor Championships
Feb. 28, 2004
Seattle, Wash. - Senior Chloe Jarvis won the MPSF Indoor Championship title in the 800m with a 2:08.57 NCAA provisional qualifying time. Overall, the Golden Bear women finished sixth (53 points) at the three-day championship, more than double what they scored last year. Cal's men (108 points) took second only to UCLA (127 points), while finishing well ahead of third-place Stanford (82.50 points).
'As a staff we are incredibly proud of our young men and women. We represented the University of California in a fashion that has not been done in a long time,' said Director of Track & Field Chris Huffins, who noted it was the Bears highest finish since his own senior year at Cal. 'We beat some tough teams and we have quite a few people heading to nationals.'
Other highlights Saturday came from senior Rhuben Williams who finished second in the weight throw, 64-10.50 (19.77m), a provisional NCAA mark. Teammate Tony Miranda finished fifth in the event 59-01.25 (18.01m). Senior Bruce Giron finished second in the triple jump, 51-09.00 (15.77m), also a provisional qualifying mark, the day after Teak Wilburn and David Glasgow finished 1-2 in the high jump. Junior Ricci Dula finished second (6.85) in the 60m, followed by teammate Nick Mazur (6.86) in third and senior Ahmad Wright in sixth (6.90). Freshman Darren Woods finished second in the 200m (21.55) followed by Wright in third at 21.64 and junior Toby Atawo in fifth (21.95). In addition, Woods finished third in the 400m (47.69).
For the women, other Saturday highlights came from senior Stephanie Cowling who finished fourth in the 200m (25.18) and freshman Kira Costa who finished fourth in the pole vault, 12-08.75 (3.88m). Junior Jenna Johnson who finished sixth in the shot put 49-06.50 (15.10m). Cal got a top-three finish from its 4x400 medley relay team, Cowling, senior Deanna Slaton, sophomore Osarhiemen Omwanghe, and junior Brooke Meredith (who won the pentathlon Thursday) when they finished in 3:45.26 to place third.
'I believe we are a better outdoor team than indoor team and this was a great harbinger of the rest of the season,' Huffins added.
Cal will visit 'last chance' meets next Saturday before home action opens Sunday March 7 with the Blue v. Gold Intrasquad Meet.
