Feb. 28, 2004
SEATTLE - Playing in their final regular season home games, seniors Giuliana Mendiola and Andrea Lalum scored 22 and 19 points respectively, put it wasn't enough to overtake the Arizona Wildcats, who clinched at least a share of the Pac-10 title with a 71-54 win at Bank of America Arena, Saturday.
The Wildcats (22-7 overall, 14-4) won their fourth straight game in the series against the Huskies, who end the regular season with a 16-11 overall record and a 9-9 Pac-10 mark. The win was Arizona's first at Bank of America Arena, as the Wildcats' lone win the all-time series in Seattle came at Mercer Arena.
Mendiola and Lalum were the only Huskies to score in double-figures, while Lalum also led the squad with a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman guard Cameo Hicks added eight points and six rebounds, while freshman post Maggie O'Hara grabbed seven boards.
Arizona had four players in double-figures, led by 22 from last year's Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, Shawntinice Polk. Polk added a game-high 14 rebounds. Dee-Dee Wheeler scored 17 points, while Aimee Grzyb and CoCoa Sanford chipped in 15 and 11, respectively. Sanford just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
The Huskies led by as many as three points twice in the early going, until Arizona used an 11-0 run to take an eight-point lead, 15-7, at 11:22 in the first half. The Wildcats never relinquished their lead but UW closed the gap to one point on a three-pointer from Hicks at 4:24 (26-25). Arizona finished the second half on a 9-3 run and led 34-28 at the half.
The Huskies weren't able to dig themselves out of their first-half whole, as the Wildcats extended their lead to 10 just a minute into the second frame. Arizona's largest lead of the game was an 18-point spread with 37 seconds left in the game.
Up next for Washington will be the Pac-10 Tournament held in San Jose, Calif., March 5-9. Tournament seeds will be announced Sunday, Feb. 29, at approximately 5 p.m. PT.
