W-GOLF IN 13TH AT SPARTAN INVITE

Mar 2, 2004

CORRAL de TIERRA, Calif. -  The women's golf team returned to form here Tuesday to card a first round 315, and stand within 10 strokes of the top half of the field, after the first round of the  Spartan Invitational on the par-72 Corral de Tierra Country Club layout.

Tuesday's opening round is CU's lowest of the spring and a moral victory as the Buffs shaved 28 strokes off their last tournament round two weeks ago in San Jose where they carded a 344-343-687 in a tough spring opener.

Cal leads the team race with a 1-over-par 289, a comfortable five strokes ahead of second place UCLA (294).  UNLV (295) is in third, while Stanford and Washington each have a share of fourth place with a first round 297.  Hawaii's Sara Odelius, UC-Irvine's Angela Won, Cal's Sophie Andersson and Angela Rho of Stanford all shot a 2-under-par 70 and are in a fight for the top of the leaderboard, and a just one stroke ahead of three players sitting at 1-under.

Allison Rella paced a Buff team that is fifth of the 16-team field in par-5 scoring, averaging 5.20 on holes 3, 9, 13 and 16.  The junior shot par on the front nine and bettered her first round season average to card a 77 for a piece of the seven-way share of 34th place, just two strokes from the top-20.  With a 78, senior Robin Worthington hit her second best opening round score of the year and is in 41st place.  Also returning to form was freshman Hannah Hoch whose first round 79 is her lowest since November, and also gives her room to improve as she sits in a tie for 50th after today's round.

While her streak of team low score in the last five tournaments is at jeaopardy, Maria Persson Gulda kept her unblemished season scoring streak alive as the sophomore carded an 81 to round out CU's scoring efforts for the day with a 59th place showing.  In just her fourth tournament of the year, and first since the Heather Farr Memorial in October, Jennifer Footlik returned to the links and is in 68th after a first round 82.

The final rounds will be decided on Wednesday.  During the 2000-01 season the Buffs finished 10th in this tournament with a 317-305-303-925.
