No. 3 Cal Defeats Portland St. (6-0) and Cal State Fullerton (11-0)
March 5, 2004
Fullerton, Calif. - In their opening two games at the Worth Invitational, the Bears emerged with victories over Portland State (6-0) and host Cal State Fullerton (11-0). No. 3 Cal moves to 19-2 on the season and stretched its win streak to four games.
In the opening game against Portland State, Kelly Anderson toed the rubber against Christy Hess. Hess, assisted by a couple of double plays, stayed with Anderson pitch for pitch through the opening three frames. In the fourth inning, the Bears burst out, as they have tended to do in recent games, for a big inning.
Vicky Galindo led off with a double, her second hit of the game, and Lindsay James singled and stole second. With one out Haley Woods came up with a clutch hit to score Galindo. Jessica Pamanian kept the inning going with a two-run single, scoring James and pinch-runner Gwen Arafiles. Chelsea Spencer walked and proceeded to steal second, with Pamanian stealing third in front of her.
After two Viking errors, the Bears had their second consecutive six-run inning in as many games. Overall, Cal stole four bags in the inning to put the pressure on Hess and the Portland State defense.
Anderson cruised through the Portland State order, never facing any real danger. She pitched a four-hit shutout, her fourth of the season, striking out seven.
The second game, under the lights, matched Kristina Thorson with Brooke Weekley. The Bears got to the Titan hurlers early in often, putting up 11 runs in five innings.
Seven Bears drove in a run in and eight different Bears crossed the plate in the romp, highlighted by Spencer and her 2-3, 2 runs, 3 RBI performance.
Thorson was the benefactor, pitching four shutout innings, including five strikeouts. She improved her record to 8-0. Sarah Adams mopped up in the fifth before the game was called.
Cal takes on Cal State Northridge Cal State Northridge at noon and Michigan State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
