Cougars Win 11 Events at McDonald's Last Chance Track Meet

MOSCOW, Idaho -- The Washington State Cougars track and field competitors won 11 events and reached 15 personal best marks Saturday at the McDonald's Last Chance Meet at the Kibbie Dome on the University of Idaho campus.

None of the Cougars who had already established NCAA qualifying marks improved in their events and no additional WSU athletes reached qualifying marks.

The WSU men won the six events. James McSwain (sophomore, Las Vegas, Nev.) had the winning time in the 200m dash with a PR of 21.87 seconds after finishing second in the 60m dash with a PR of 6.87.

Jon Manthey (junior, Federal Way, Wash.) won the 800m run in a time of 1:56.25, while Ian Johnson (senior, Spokane, Wash.) won the mile with a time of 4:19.62. Freshman Chris Williams (Federal Way, Wash.) won the 3000m race in a time of 8:45.35.

Matt Mason (junior, Marietta, Ga.) won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.05. Redshirt freshman Cameron Neel (Woodinville, Wash.) won the shot put with a heave of 51-3 1/2 (15.63m).

The Cougar women won five events. Brandi Probasco-Canda (freshman, Portland, Ore.) led a first through fourth sweep of the 400m dash with a time of 57.45.

Senior Ana Cabrera (Vancouver, Wash.) ran in her only indoor race with a winning 3000m time of 10:42.69.

Pole vaulters Karla McGee (senior, Lethbridge, Alb., Canada) and Tamara Diles (redshirt sophomore, Bellevue, Wash.) both cleared 12-10 (3.91m) but McGee won the competition.

Diana Pickler (sophomore, Sachse, Texas) won the long jump with a leap of 18-4 1/4 (5.59m) while Blessing Ufodiama (senior, Long Beach, Calif.) own the triple jump with a mark of 41-10 1/2 (12.76m).

Marie Muai (junior, Tacoma, Wash.) won the weight throw with a toss of 62-1 (18.92m), well below her school record mark of 63-6 3/4.

Former Cougar eight-time All-American, Whitney Evans, returned from her home in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and won the high jump with a clearance of 5-8 3/4 (1.75m).

The NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships is set for March 12-13, at Fayetteville, Ark. The Cougars will open the 2004 outdoor season March 20, at the Trojan Invitation at USC's Los Angeles campus.
