No. 1 Stanford Rallies For 8-7 Win Over USC In 13 Innings

March 6, 2004

LOS ANGELES - Danny Putnam's RBI single in the top of the 13th inning capped a furious rally Saturday as the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal defeated the USC Trojans, 8-7, in a 13-inning, nonconference game at Dedeaux Field. Stanford scored four runs in the top of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.

David O'Hagan (2-0) earned the win for Stanford (15-2) with four scoreless innings in relief while Matt Manship retired the side in the 13th for his first save of the season. Clayton Wentworth (0-2) took the loss despite a gutsy effort with 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits. USC is now 4-9 overall this season.

In the top of the ninth, Brian Hall led off with a single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by pinch hitter Chris Carter. With one out and an 0-2 count, third baseman Jonny Ash hit a two-run homer to right off USC reliever Bret Butler. It was Ash's first home run of the season. Shortstop Jed Lowrie doubled to left center, advanced to third on a single by Putnam and scored on an RBI single by first baseman John Mayberry, Jr., to tie the game.

The Trojans led off the bottom of the 12th with a double by Blake Sharpe after Hall tripped as the ball sailed over his head. Darin Vieira sacrificed Sharpe to third and freshman centerfield Daniel Perales was intentionally walked. Pinch hitter Kyle Degener struck out when he bunted foul on the third strike. Second baseman Rafael Torres grounded to short to end the Trojans' chance.

Perales went 3-for-4 for the Trojans with a triple and four RBI. His RBI single in the fourth tied the game at 3-3. Hector Estrella later singled home Perales to put the Trojans ahead. USC added three runs in the fifth, but could not hold the lead.

USC starter Ian Kennedy went six innings in the no-decision, allowed two earned runs on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Stanford starter Jeff Gilmore threw four innings, allowed five earned runs on eight hits.
