March 8, 2004

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford University women's soccer Assistant Coach Jay Cooney has been promoted to first assistant coach, announced Head Coach Paul Ratcliffe. Cooney, who boasts a wealth of collegiate and professional soccer coaching experience, enters his second season with the program.

'I'm very excited to promote Jay Cooney to the first assistant coach position,' said Ratcliffe. 'Jay is an expert goalkeeper coach who teaches the technical side of the game with great detail. The Stanford women's soccer program is very fortunate to retain such a talented and dedicated coach.'

'After spending last season at Stanford, I couldn't image coaching anywhere else,' said Cooney. 'I have enjoyed working with Paul and this team so much, it would have been hard to leave. I'm just so thankful that Paul, Earl Koberlin, and Dr. Ted Leland have seen me fit to try to fill the void left here by Stephaine Erickson.'

Cooney served as the goalkeeper coach for the San Jose CyberRays of the Women's United Soccer Association and his 2001 CyberRays defeated the Atlanta Beat to be crowned the inaugural WUSA Champions. Under Cooney's guidance, San Jose goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene was honored as the 2001 WUSA Goalkeeper of the Year.

Cooney came to the CyberRays from the College of William & Mary, where he was an assistant coach. He was also the assistant director of Soccer Plus, a goalkeepers school owned by Tony DiCicco, the WUSA's chief operations officer and coach of the 1999 U.S. Women's World Cup team.

'I hope to help Paul improve on the success that we have had here in the past years, ' said Cooney. 'I'm looking forward to the challenge in front of me and I'm so happy to be able to call Stanford home.'

In 1999, Cooney was an assistant coach for Providence College, as well as an assistant coach for the Greater Boston Bolts Under-18 and Under-19 teams. He was the practice goalkeeper for the Boston Bulldogs, a Major League Soccer (MLS) affiliated A-League team. From 1993 to 1998, Cooney served as the head coach of Wellesley (Mass.) High School varsity boys' team and was named Bay State Coach of the Year in 1998.
