March 9, 2004
PULLMAN, Wash. --- Washington State senior offensive tackle Calvin Armstrong and junior linebacker Will Derting are among 54 preliminary candidates for the Rotary Lombardi Award, as announced Tuesday by the Rotary Lombardi Selection Committee.
Armstrong earned first team All-Pac-10 honors in 2002 and honorable mention in 2003. The Chehalis, Wash., native has started 33 of 37 games in his Cougar career. Armstrong was also a member of the Rotary Lombardi Award watch list entering last season.
Derting was a first team All-Pac-10 honoree in 2003 after recording 86 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks. As a freshman, Derting tied a national record for linebackers by recording three interceptions against Nevada, returning one 98 yards for a touchdown.
Armstrong and Derting represent two of the six Pac-10 players on the list. USC's Shaun Cody, Matt Grootegoed, and Mike Patterson, and Oregon's Adam Snyder are also among the 54.
The annual Rotary Lombardi Award Dinner will be held in Houston, Texas Dec. 8, with all net proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
Eligibility for the honor is limited to down linemen and defensive players who line up within five yards of the football. The Rotary Lombardi Selection Committee is comprised of over 500 members, including all past finalists, all Division I head coaches, and a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters.
