March 11, 2004
FRESNO, Calif. - No. 23 ranked Oregon State pounded 13 hits en route to a 9-0 victory against North Texas in Friday's opening game of the Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic hosted by Fresno State University.
OSU (20-7) picked up its 20th win of the season in the five-inning victory, while North Texas dropped to 7-26 on the year.
Freshman Brianne McGowan got the Beavers on the scoreboard early when she led off the second inning with a home run over the right-center field fence.
'Breanne had a nice swing and did a great job of getting us on the board,' said OSU head coach Kirk Walker.
The Beavers improved to 14-0 on the season when at least one OSU player hits a home run.
Oregon State added seven runs on eight hits in the third inning. Sophomore Adrienne Alo belted a triple to center field to open the frame and after the Beavers batted around the order Alo blasted a 2-run double later in the inning. Fellow sophomore Vanessa Iapala also had a 2-RBI double in third.
'Offensively it was nice to see us adjust to their pitching and put a lot of runs on the scoreboard,' said Walker.
Sophomore Lisa Allen finished with a perfect 3-for-3 performance from the plate, while McGowan went 2-for-2. Freshman Mia Longfellow, Alo, and Iapala each went 2-for-3 in the contest. Longfellow also tallied her team-leading ninth stolen base of the season.
Freshman hurler Ta'Tyana McElroy improved to 6-1 on the season, allowing just three hits in five innings of work.
'Ty had a one-hitter going through four innings,' said Walker. 'She never gave them (North Texas) anything to work with.'
Oregon State returns to action on Saturday when the Beavers face San Diego State at 9 a.m. before meeting University of Utah at 1 p.m.
