Baseball Falls At PETCO Park, 3-0 to Ninth-Ranked Long Beach State

March 12, 2004

SAN DIEGO, CA - The UCLA Baseball (11-7) team fell to ninth-ranked Long Beach State (12-4), 3-0 on Friday afternoon at PETCO Park in San Diego.

The Dirtbags got on the scoreboard early with two runs in the first inning. A walk and a hit batter put runners on first and second before they moved ahead on a passed ball. Both runs would cross home plate on a Brad Davis single up the middle.

Another Long Beach State run would score in the second frame when Steve Velazco's one-out single put a Dirtbag on base. He would score on a double down the left field line from Troy Tulowitzki. After two innings, UCLA trailed 3-0.

However, neither team could get its offense going as no runs would be scored after the second.

Bruin starter Wes Whisler (1-2) was solid in his first complete game of the season. He scattered six hits and allowed three runs, two of which were earned in eight innings.

Dirtbag ace and All-American Jered Weaver threw 15 strikeouts and walked one batter in eight innings of action. He allowed only one Bruin hit.

Billy Susdorf and Ryan McCarthy each had singles for the Bruins two hits on the day.

The Bruins will return to PETCO Park tomorrow for a 3:00 p.m. match-up with Nebraska. Senior right-hander Casey Janssen will get the start on the mound for UCLA.
